What the hell is Serverless architecture?

The Information Technology (IT) market constantly presents new trends, some of them pick up and others do not even go beyond the concept phase. The latest trend is the Wave of Serverless, a cloud computing solution that has caught the eye of developers and industry professionals since last year.

Also presented to the market as FaaS (Function as a Service) or Serving Platform as a Service, Serverless is already being disseminated by a group of Cloud Computing providers.

But what exactly is Serverless. Its meaning may be that it will no longer be necessary to have virtual machines in the Cloud. It is true that the world of technologies is evolving very fast, but we have not yet reached that level. The hardware infrastructure in Cloud Computing continues to emerge as one of the pillars of sustaining the offer of IT resources as a service.

What is Serverless Architecture?

Already incorporated into the offer of some Cloud Computing providers in the foreign market, the Serverless service is part of an event-oriented computing architecture. The platform is designed to enable developers and other IT professionals to create and run applications without worrying about the functions performed by virtual machines.

The Serverless platform allows developers to be free of the work of managing the server infrastructure while they are performing their activities. Of course, the operation of creating and running their applications continues to follow the same processing flow in virtual machines.

The big difference is that by Serverless, all management happens to be done by the Cloud provider. Whoever is hiring the service no longer has to worry about provisioning, scaling the processing capacity to run their software solutions, database or storage systems.

In evaluating the proposal of Serverless, Gartner analysts say the new solution has similarities to the PaaS (Platform as a Service) offer. It’s the same opinion of developers in the market. However, the professionals point out that there are some differences between both platforms in Cloud.

Developers say that using PaaS requires the need to handle a set of functions or methods. You must also follow a series of requirements for service configuration. In Serverless, they say that this process is simpler, since it is only necessary to specify the function to be executed.

With this feature, the Serverless architecture comes with the mission to accelerate the development of Cloud applications. This is because the technology offers a set of actions, distinct and independent.

By disregarding infrastructure concerns, professionals can spend more time on their work, letting the provider take care of server infrastructure.

It is not yet known if this cloud computing architecture will be accepted in the market. For now it is a trend still in the concept stage. Let’s wait!
